Winter Plumbing Tips for Athens & North Alabama

A cold-weather plumbing plan starts before the first frozen faucet. These winter plumbing tips help Athens and North Alabama homeowners prepare the house, ask useful questions, and respond to a suspected freeze.

Five winter plumbing tips before a cold snap

1. Disconnect outdoor hoses. Drain and store them. Winterize outdoor supply lines according to their installation instructions.

2. Protect exposed piping. Check unheated spaces and exterior-wall plumbing. Insulate vulnerable hot and cold lines; insulation reduces risk but cannot guarantee protection.

3. Maintain indoor heat. Avoid lowering the thermostat overnight during severe cold. If traveling, the Red Cross recommends leaving heat on at 55°F or higher.

4. Allow warm air to reach pipes. Keep garages with supply lines closed. Open sink cabinets where appropriate, first moving cleaners out of children’s reach.

5. Make a freeze-response plan. Know the water shutoff location. A small cold-water drip at a faucet supplied by exposed piping may help during severe cold; it is not a substitute for other protection.

If a faucet stops flowing

A trickle or no flow in freezing weather may indicate frozen piping. Do not use an open flame to thaw it. Call a plumber when the frozen section is inaccessible or cannot be located.

If a pipe leaks or bursts, shut off the water if safe and call for help. Stay away from water near energized electrical equipment.

Prepare the details that make a service call useful

Write down which fixtures have changed and when you first noticed the problem. Tell us whether the concern affects the entire home, one bathroom, an outside faucet, or a detached building. Mention any previous winter repair at the same location.

You do not need to crawl into a difficult space or remove wall finishes to collect information. A photo from a safe, accessible location and a clear description give us a starting point. Let us know about locked gates, pets, or other access arrangements when scheduling.

Planning for holiday travel or a vacant home

Choose someone who can check the property while you are away and make sure they know whom to contact. A remote temperature alert can be useful information, but it does not replace a plan for someone to respond at the property.

Ask about the specific plumbing arrangement before closing valves or draining equipment. Water heaters, outdoor fixtures, and other installed systems can need different procedures. Keep their manuals available and discuss a winterization plan suitable for the home.
